The important role of cold trap in vacuum operation
1. Improve vacuum efficiency
The oil, gas, and water vapor in the vacuum chamber are condensed into liquid by the low temperature of the cold trap, reducing the impact on the vacuum degree. Freeze vacuum drying is a common drying method. Taking 1g of ice as an example, it can produce 10000L of water vapor at 0.1Torr. The moisture inside the drying oven will generate a huge amount of water vapor. If these water vapor are only removed by a vacuum pump, the efficiency of the vacuum pump will be extremely low. The low temperature of the cold trap can directly condense water vapor at the location of the cold trap, greatly improving the efficiency of the vacuum pump. This is why both low-temperature drying ovens and low-temperature centrifugal concentrators need to be equipped with cold traps.
2. Reduce the impact of corrosive test gas vacuum pumps
Corrosive reagents are often present in vacuum systems. Corrosive reagents will be converted into gas molecules during the vacuum pumping process and discharged into the atmosphere through pipelines and vacuum pumps. Corrosive gases may cause permanent damage to the vacuum pump when flowing through it, such as acidic gases corroding the metal components of the vacuum pump. Corrosive gases passing through the exhaust port of the vacuum pump, if directly discharged into the atmosphere, can also cause air pollution.
The use of a cold trap can effectively condense and collect corrosive gases before entering the vacuum pump, reducing the damage of corrosive gases to the vacuum pump.
